Heidi Montague graduated from Columbia University with a Master of Science in Social Work via the advanced clinical practice track in health, mental health and disabilities. Through this program, she was guided through a PROP (power, racism, oppression and privilege) lens, which continues to inform her work. She is trained in Psychodynamic, Cognitive Behavioral, Person-Centered, Motivational Interviewing and trauma-informed approaches.
Before joining the practice, Heidi worked at Las Encinas Hospital in Pasadena as a group therapist and case manager for individuals struggling with mental health and addiction issues. She also volunteered for Inside Circle, an organization that empowers both the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated towards healing and change, working to develop the foundation’s social media presence. Heidi additionally interned with Communities in Schools, a drop-out prevention and wellness program for children and teenagers.
Heidi’s practice is non-pathologizing and focuses on self-awareness, identity, life transitions, mental health, alcohol and substance abuse and dependence, women’s issues, communication, interpersonal relationships, anxiety, depression, prolonged grief, and mindfulness. Heidi’s previous careers as both an actress and massage therapist anchor her attentions towards storytelling and the mind-body connection.
No matter what’s bringing you to therapy, it’s safe to say something’s not going the way you’d like. You might be feeling frustrated or overwhelmed, unmotivated, confused, riddled with dread, or tired of the same patterns playing out both internally and in your relationships. Or maybe something’s just not going the way you thought it would and you don’t even know how or where to start changing it. On top of that, trying to find a therapist can feel daunting as well.
Ultimately, the goal of therapy is growth. Although we often fear and resist change, growth can be realized more fully in a collaborative space where you feel comfortable to be yourself, seen and understood, and safe enough to explore the parts of yourself that would benefit from change.
In my work I aim to understand your experience as thoroughly as possible in order to guide you toward greater awareness, choicefulness and growth. Clients have said that they appreciate my curiosity, sense of humor, and direct, pragmatic approach, as well as my life experience as a corporate executive, photographer, writer, teacher, and parent.
